Why openings deserve their own measurement
Permanent standby generators exhaust combustion gases outdoors. Manufacturer instructions therefore focus not only on the exterior wall but on places where air can enter an occupied building. The nearest potential entry point can control a location even when the generator-to-wall dimension looks generous.
Cummins currently instructs that all parts of its permanently installed generator enclosure be at least 60 inches from openings in walls of structures that may be occupied, including operable windows, doors, dryer vents and fresh-air intakes. Champion likewise publishes a five-foot minimum from doors, windows and other openings for its home standby guidance. Other manufacturers and models may express the requirement differently, so use the exact manual.
What counts as an opening?
Do not limit the walk-around to obvious windows. Depending on the manual and applicable code, relevant points can include doors, combustion-air or HVAC intakes, dryer vents, crawl-space openings, foundation vents and other paths where exhaust could enter. A sealed-looking opening should not be assumed irrelevant unless the governing documents explicitly treat it that way.
How to measure a candidate location
- Mark the generator footprint and intended orientation.
- Identify the closest point of every relevant opening around the proposed location.
- Measure from the generator enclosure as the installation manual directs — not from the pad edge unless the manual says so.
- Compare the shortest measurement with the exact model requirement.
- Repeat after changing orientation; the exhaust/service side can change which location is practical.
Why the planner uses a movable opening marker
The shortest distance is not always straight across from the center of the generator. An opening a few feet up or down the wall can still be the closest potential entry point.
