Champion Standby Generator Placement: Wall & Opening Clearance Precheck
Champion publishes unusually clear consumer placement guidance, making it useful for a precheck — but local codes and the exact installation manual can still be stricter.

Champion’s published starting values
Champion’s current home standby guidance says a generator should be at least five feet from doors, windows and other openings and no less than 18 inches from the home where local code allows. Champion also explains that efficient placement near fuel and electrical service can reduce trenching and installation cost.
Some Champion installation documentation additionally describes specific exhaust-side and overhead clearances. Those details depend on the product documentation, so the planner uses only the clearly published wall/opening values as its general Champion starting preset.
How to use the Champion preset
- Select Champion home standby guidance.
- Enter the actual wall-to-property-line width of the side yard.
- Drag the generator footprint to the candidate location.
- Move the opening marker to the closest window, door or vent.
- Enter your verified local property-line setback.
- Open the exact Champion installation manual and replace any starting value that differs.
Why the property line remains manual
Champion cannot publish one property-line setback for every US jurisdiction. That is a local rule layer. The planner therefore never substitutes manufacturer guidance for zoning or permitting requirements.
