Cummins is explicit about occupied-building openings
Cummins’ current home standby safety guidance says all parts of a permanently installed generator enclosure must be at least 60 inches from openings in walls of structures that may be occupied. Its examples include operable windows, doors, dryer vents and fresh-air intakes.
That makes the opening check useful to model interactively: the closest relevant opening might sit above, below or diagonally from the proposed unit rather than directly opposite the generator centerline.
What the Cummins preset does not assume
The planner preloads the five-foot opening requirement from the published safety guidance. It deliberately does not preload a universal house-wall clearance because the exact product installation manual and site conditions should control that field. Enter the current value for your exact unit.
Site-selection sequence
- Confirm the exact Cummins model and installation manual.
- Use the published opening rule as a first exclusion zone.
- Enter the model-specific wall/service clearances.
- Enter the verified local property-line setback.
- Check buried utilities, fuel route, ATS/panel location and other local permit requirements.
- Have the final location reviewed by the qualified installer / authority required for the project.
