How Far Should a Standby Generator Be From the House?
A wall-clearance number is only one part of generator placement. The same spot can satisfy the wall distance and still fail because of a nearby window, vent, overhang, service area or local setback.

Why there is no single universal distance
Standby generators are tested and documented as complete products. Some current residential models are permitted by their manufacturer to sit relatively close to an exterior wall under specific conditions, while other clearances around the enclosure remain larger. Local code can also require more distance than the manufacturer minimum.
That means the useful question is not “what is the generator rule?” but “what does the exact installation manual require at each side of this exact unit, and what additional local rule applies to this lot?”
An 18-inch claim does not mean “18 inches is safe everywhere”
Generac describes certain air-cooled units as certified for installation as close as 18 inches from a structure, while also requiring clearance around the enclosure and location away from doors, windows or other openings. Champion publishes similar close-to-wall guidance for some home standby units while separately specifying opening and exhaust-side distances. Those are conditional manufacturer statements, not a universal zoning rule.

Use the wall number as one layer in a placement screen
Identify the exact model
Do not borrow dimensions from another generator that happens to have the same brand or kW rating.
Mark every opening near the proposed spot
Windows, doors, vents, dryer outlets and fresh-air intakes can matter even when the wall distance itself looks acceptable.
Add the local setback
Measure from the actual property line, not automatically from the fence. A fence may not sit exactly on the surveyed boundary.
Compare candidate locations
A slightly longer fuel or electrical run can be cheaper than moving a finished installation that fails inspection.
