Is 65W the USB-C laptop sweet spot?

65W is common because it covers many thin-and-light laptops while remaining compact, but a 65W brick does not guarantee 65W reaches the device.

Why 65W is common

Many productivity laptops ship with or target around 60–65W. For those devices, a dedicated 65W USB-C PD port is often a sensible match without paying for much unused headroom.

The 60W cable edge case

A 60W-rated cable creates a 60W ceiling, so it can prevent a device from receiving the full 65W target. To preserve full headroom above 60W, use an appropriate 5A e-marked cable. Older cables are commonly marketed as 100W; current USB-IF high-power markings use 240W.

Check the port, not only the charger total

On a multi-port charger, the USB-C port you use may be limited to 45W or 60W even when the brick says 65W or more. Plugging another device in can also trigger a different power-sharing table.

Bigger is fine when standards-compliant

A 100W or 140W USB-C PD charger can normally be used with a 65W-class device. The device negotiates what it accepts, while the larger charger simply provides additional available headroom.
