Why can a laptop battery drain while plugged in?

Being plugged in does not guarantee the battery is gaining charge. If the laptop is consuming more power than the charger can deliver, the battery can supply the difference.

A simple example

Imagine a laptop drawing roughly 70W during a heavy render while the charging chain is limited to 60W. The system can use the incoming 60W and still need additional energy. Depending on the laptop's power-management behavior, the battery may slowly discharge.

Why this happens

The limiter can be the charger, port, cable, dock, shared charger load or a non-optimal charging protocol. Heavy CPU/GPU workloads also increase system draw.

How to reduce it

Use the manufacturer's recommended power class, connect directly to a sufficiently rated USB-C port, use an appropriate cable and check whether a dock or multi-port charger is reducing available power.
