Is a higher-watt USB-C charger safe?

A higher wattage rating is generally safe when the charger, cable and device use standards-compliant USB-C Power Delivery.

Why 140W does not mean “140W forced into the laptop”

USB Power Delivery is negotiated. The power source advertises what it can provide and the device requests a supported profile. A 65W laptop connected to a 140W-capable USB-PD charger still controls what it accepts.

What can still go wrong?

Avoid damaged, counterfeit or non-compliant power accessories. Also remember that a high total charger rating says nothing about whether the specific port and cable support the same level.

When extra wattage is useful

Headroom is useful for multi-port charging, future devices and higher-power laptops. It does not make a device charge faster than that device's own intake limit.
